MILTON – Like the past several years, children in Queens County can once again hunt for Easter eggs at the Pine Grove Park in Milton.
According to the Queens County Regional Municipality, this Easter egg hunt has been an annual tradition in Queens, started by community volunteers Sarah and John Tutty in 2012.
Sarah Tutty says it all began seven years ago, when someone asked online if the town had an Easter egg hunt planned. Based on that conversation, she says several people talked about planning a hunt themselves as there wasn't one offered at the time.
Although their family led the event, Tutty says it was a community effort, with many families donating eggs and coming to help hide the eggs for the kids the day of the event.
“By the fourth year, we exceeded 100 kids,” says Tutty.
After six years at the helm, Tutty is finally ready to pass the torch. With her children getting older and her son’s hockey games always conflicting with the hunt, it was time for someone else to take over the organization. The Region of Queens Municipality was happy to do so to ensure it continued.
“It is an event looked forward to by local children and parents, is a rare activity that can be enjoyed by the whole family that is fun at no cost, and incorporates physical activity,” according to the Region of Queens.
The recreation department says it will recruit volunteers to help with placing the eggs, and to help parents to keep an eye on the children as they search.
This year’s egg hunt will be held on March 31 at 11 a.m. at Pine Grove Park, 44 Highway #8, Milton. There is no cost to participants.
