Suspect accused of smashing display case glass with hammer at Greenwood Walmart remains in custody

KENTVILLE, NS – A suspect accused of attempting to steal items by smashing the glass in a store display case with a hammer is facing several charges.

Corey Ryan Graves, 32, of Kingston, was present in Kentville provincial court in custody on April 23. Reading of the charges was waived and Graves consented to being remanded in custody until April 25 for a bail hearing and election and plea.

Graves is charged with stealing property valued at less than $5,000 from Walmart; willfully damaging the property of Walmart to a value not exceeding $5,000, having his face masked with intent to commit an indictable offence and possessing a hammer under his clothes suitable for the purpose of breaking into a secure glass storage unit. Charges against Graves have not been proven in court.

According to a news release from the Kings District RCMP, police were called to a theft in progress at a Greenwood department store on April 19 at 9:53 a.m. Police said a suspect was using a hammer to break glass display cases and stealing items inside.

When police arrived at the scene, the suspect had fled in a small black car. A short time later, RCMP officers located the car and arrested the two occupants without incident. The vehicle was seized.

RCMP Forensic Identification Technicians were called to the scene to assist with collecting evidence. No one was injured during the incident.
