YARMOUTH, N.S. — Steve Berry has won a seat on Yarmouth town council following a byelection that ended May 18.
Berry will be sworn in as a new member of town council at a special council meeting happening Wednesday morning, May 22, at 10 a.m.
Four people ran for the seat that was left vacant following the death of Councillor Sandy Dennis earlier this year, after a courageous battle against cancer.
A total of 2,297 people voted in the byelection. The unofficial voting results are as follows:
Steven Berry - 1097
Gil Dares - 604
Daniel MacIsaac - 266
David Tupper - 323
Spoiled - 7
Voter turnout was reported to be 44.3 per cent.
On Saturday evening on his Vote Steve Berry Facebook page, Berry had added this post: "Just had a little sentimental moment. Stopped by Grams on Argyle Street. Took a walk in the yard and remembered the good times shared there with friends and family over the years. It’s important to me to stay humble and true to who I am and never forget where I came from. A proud southender, a family man and always a supporter of my home town. Thank you Yarmouth for this chance."
ABOUT STEVE BERRY
Berry graduated from Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School and attended St. Thomas University. He has worked at YCMHS for the last 13 years.
His community involvement includes being a founding member of the JStrong Fund, a local charity that has raised over $100,000 to support youth with the cost of sports; being a member of the Maple Grove School Advisory Committee; and involvement in Restorative Justice initiatives and recently asked to be on the Board of Governors.
He has been a math specialist/tutor at the BEA Cultural Academic Enrichment Program for over 15 years. He is a recipient of a Nova Scotia Human Rights Award with No Glory Productions, a student-led cultural awareness video. He is president of the Yarmouth Co-ed Softball League; head organizer of the JStrong Softball Tournament that has raised over $35,000 in three years, and the JStrong Cup street hockey tournament, which was held on Main Street last fall.
During his campaign he said his brand of politics is to put the people’s needs first. "I believe the public should be involved in the decision-making process every step of the way. I am running because I believe a fresh face is needed with new ideas that inspire our town. I promise to stay a humble and true community-minded person who listens, working hard to represent the public’s best interest."
