TUSKET, YARMOUTH COUNTY, NS – Fire destroyed a house in Tusket, Yarmouth County, Sunday night, but three occupants of the home – two adults and a five-year-old child – were able to get out okay.

Jonathan LeBlanc, the Eel Brook and District fire chief, said they got the call at about 7:40 p.m. and when they arrived at the fire scene at 3895 Highway 308, the structure was fully engulfed.

“The occupants informed us that they were alerted by the smoke detector to the fire and got out safely,” he said.

Five other departments responded to the blaze: Lake Vaughan, Quinan, Amirault’s Hill, Wedgeport and West Pubnico.

The last unit cleared the scene at about 1:30 a.m.

While the walls were still up the morning of Nov. 12, there is little left of the structure.

“Not much at all,” chief LeBlanc said, “and we were lucky, with the wind that we were fighting against, to keep that much of it. Once the windows broke and it got that extra air and the wind blowing through, it didn’t take long for that to go up.”

As for occupants, he said they all had a place to go the night of the fire and the Red Cross had been contacted to provide them assistance.

On social media people were expressing relief that no one was injured in the fire.

Still, those living in the home lost everything. People were already asking about ways to help those displaced who had lost everything. A Go Fund Me page has been set up to help the mother and son who lost their belongings in the fire.

(If anyone knows of other assistance being provided or needed you can message our Yarmouth Vanguard Facebook page and we can add that information to this posting.)

Asked about the cause of the fire, the fire chief said Monday morning the cause was not known. He said an investigation by the fire marshal would help to determine the cause.
