BARRINGTON, N.S. — With charges before the court including counts of attempted murder, unlawful confinement, assault and weapons charges, six people charged in connection with an incident in Barrington made court appearances over the past week.
Three people were released from custody on conditions and bail while three others remain in custody.
The RCMP laid the charges following an incident in which they say a man was injured after allegedly being assaulted by a group of people.
According to the RCMP, the incident occurred on Scotts Mill Road in Barrington in the early-morning hours of Feb. 13.
The police say a woman was also injured in the incident.
In a media release the RCMP had sent out on Feb. 15, they said their investigation had revealed that a Barrington Passage man had suffered a minor gunshot wound and other non-life-threatening injuries. The RCMP said he was treated in hospital and released.
The following people are charged in connection to this incident.
James Leslie Gerald Kane, 40, of Barrington, was arrested on Feb. 14. He has made appearances in court and is being held in custody with his next court appearance set for March 6.
Kane is charged with:
Attempted Murder Using a Firearm (2 counts)
• Unlawful Confinement (1 count)
• Assault with a Weapon (1 count)
• Pointing a Firearm (2 counts)
• Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose (1 count)
• Careless Use Firearm (1 count)
• Discharging a Firearm with Intent to Cause Bodily Harm (2 counts)
Possession of a Firearm Contrary to an Order (1 count)
Steven Kyle Scott, 29, of Barrington, was arrested on Feb. 14. He was in Yarmouth provincial court on Feb 19 where a showcause/bail hearing had been scheduled but did not take place. A court date was set for the following day in provincial court in Shelburne.
Scott is being held in custody with his next court appearance set for Feb. 28. He is charged with:

• Unlawful Confinement (1 count)
• Assault with a Weapon (1 count)
Terry James Decker, 42, of Jordan Falls, was arrested on Feb. 14 and appeared in Yarmouth provincial court on Feb. 15. He was also in court on Feb. 21 and is being held in custody with his next court appearance set for March 6.
Decker is charged with:
• Attempted Murder Using a Firearm (1 count)
• Unlawful Confinement (1 count)
• Assault with a Weapon (1 count)
• Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose (1 count)
Kristin Lynn Thistle, 31, of Barrington, was arrested on Feb. 14. A showcause/bail hearing was held on Feb. 19 in provincial court in Yarmouth. Evidence presented during that hearing is banned from publication. She was released on conditions with a surety agreed to by the court putting up $2,500 in bail. During her release she is subject to house arrest conditions, must attend court as directed, is not to possess or consume alcohol or drugs, nor have any weapons/firearms in her possession. She was also ordered not to communicate with any of the co-accused or victim(s) in this case, along with other individuals identified by the court. Her next court date is April 3.
Thistle is charged with:
• Attempted Murder Using a Firearm (1 count)
• Unlawful Confinement (1 count)
• Assault with a Weapon (1 count)
Carmen Steven Shaw, 20, of Barrington, was arrested on Feb. 16. He appeared in court on Feb. 21 and was released from custody on conditions. His next scheduled court date is April 18.
Shaw is charged with:
• Attempted Murder Using a Firearm (1 count)
• Unlawful Confinement (1 count)
• Assault with a Weapon (1 count)
• Obstruction (1 count)
The obstruction charge before the court alleges that Shaw willfully obstructed RCMP Constable Dayle Burris by tampering with/deleting a digital audio recorded file.
Keaton Hiltz, 24, of Clyde River, was arrested on Feb. 16. He appeared in Yarmouth provincial court on Feb. 19. A showcause/bail hearing was scheduled for this date but instead the Crown and defence agreed to conditions for him to be released on.
Hiltz is charged with:
• Attempted Murder Using a Firearm (1 count)
• Unlawful Confinement (1 count)
• Assault with a Weapon (1 count)
Conditions of his release included being under house arrest, refraining from the possession and consumption of alcohol and non-medically prescribed drugs; not possession weapons or firearms; a reporting requirement and refraining from contact with co-accused and victim(s) of in this matter. Three people also put up $1,000 in bail to secure his release.
Lawyer Phil Star, representing Hiltz in court on Feb. 19, told the court his client understood the seriousness of the offences and asked to court to stress to him that breaching his release conditions could land him back in custody.
The investigation into this matter is ongoing and is being conducted by the RCMP Southwest Nova Major Crimes Unit.
