Road concerns
Deputy Warden Linda Gregory brought up concerns with slippery roads following the first snowfall of the season the morning of Nov. 27.
“I had people mentioning to me how awful it was…I didn’t think it was acceptable today.”
Gregory suggested council write a letter to the department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal (TIR) to discuss road safety during winter.
“I would like to see a letter go with our concerns of hazardous roads and no road crew available,” she said.
Warden Jimmy MacAlpine said he spoke with an employee of TIR the morning of the 27th.
“He told me a lot of their crew was out salting,” he said. “They have a crew on right now. Their winter crew starts Dec. 2 and they still have their summer or fall crew, whatever you call it, and they are still working right now.”
MacAlpine said it would be more appropriate to add this item on the agenda for the next meeting with TIR to have a discussion on the matter.
Sewer and road upgrade complete
Sewer and asphalt work for Smith’s Cove Cross Road and Sunset Drive has wrapped up.
Deputy CAO Jeff Sunderland said work began last summer to install a new sewer line for Sunset and Smith. The new infrastructure covers 483 metres on Sunset and 270 metres on Smith.
“It’s a gravity system, there’s no pumping required on those two systems,” he said.
Sunderland said new asphalt was then laid down to cover the areas where the road was dug for the sewer infrastructure.
“Less than half of the road was paved, it’s just where the sewer line went in…It’s just wrapping it up before winter sets in.”
The project cost $578, 601.
Free bus fare
Riders using Kings Transit will receive a free ride during the holidays.
Council approved a motion to provide free ridership with Kings Transit for Dec. 18 to 22 in the region between Weymouth and Cornwallis.
Kings Transit Authority is a public transit system that operates in the Annapolis Valley from Weymouth to Wolfville.
