Queens County’s longest shinny coming up

Come celebrate Queens County’s Longest Shinny event, Shinny on our Pond, starting at 8 am on Dec. 23 at the Emera Place in Liverpool. LIVERPOOL - “In celebrating 150 years of being Canada, hockey, as Canada's game, had to be part of the celebrations,” says Canada 150 committee member Steve Burns.
Burns says, in 2015, the Region of Queens council of the day selected two residents from each of the seven municipal districts to form the 14-member Canada 150 committee, and tasked that committee with coming up with ideas for celebrating the sesquicentennial of Canada's confederation.
One of those ideas generated by the committee was Queens County's Longest Shinny, Shinny on Our Pond, which will be held at Queens Place Emera Centre on Dec. 23 starting at 8 a.m.
“The idea came about as a way to involve all ages and skill levels in playing, and also to create an event that would encourage the community to come and cheer on the teams through the event,” says Burns.
Once all the registrations are in, the organizers will have a better idea of how the event will unfold. Depending on the number of teams who register, Burns says it is expected that teams will begin playing at 8 a.m. Details of how the scheduling will work out is to be determined based on the number of registered players.
Although the event is called Queens County’s Longest Shinny, there is no defined record to break, says Burns.
“To our knowledge, no official continuous shinny games have been played in Queens County previously, so that in itself establishes an unofficial local record of sorts,” he says.
On the day of the event, there will be prize draws throughout the day. The committee is really looking for the community to come out have some fun, enjoy the matchups of teams and exciting play, and support the event, while having some pre-Christmas fun.
To register for the event, contact Queens Place Emera Centre’s Roslyn Rowter at [email protected] and include details like age, name, phone number and email by Dec. 16. Youth and adults are all encouraged to register for this co-ed fun event.
Primarily, Burns says the event is being held to promote and encourage healthy active lifestyles in the community, and to celebrate Canada's 150th anniversary of Confederation.
“It will be exciting, and it's a great chance to come together as a community to play, watch and enjoy Canada's game.”
