The last Sable Island horse at the Shubenacadie Provincial Wildlife Park has died.
On the park's Facebook page, staff said they had to say "another hard goodbye."
"Our Sable Island Horse was born in 1989, having reached the age of 30 years, he started to decline in health, mobility and stamina. He had been under constant care of veterinarians and staff and despite all efforts, we felt he no longer had the quality of life he deserved and so he was humanely euthanized," said the post from Tuesday.
"It was our privilege to work with such a unique animal. Because Sable Island is now a federal park reserve, the custody of the horses is with Parks Canada."
He was the last Sable Island horse left from a herd that was gifted to the park back decades ago.
Back in 1960, the Sable Island wild horses were put up for sale and were going to be used for things like dog food and glue. Many children wrote to Prime Minister John Diefenbaker who spared them. As a gift, several horses were sent to the three wildlife parks in Nova Scotia at the time.
