WOLFVILLE, N.S. — The newly formed Stage Whispers theatre group has found success with its first undertaking.
Heathers: The Musical is a dark, edgy play focusing on the high school years. Opening night was May 23, and the show will have a three-night, one-matinee run.
Laura George, from Avon View High School, and Keigan and Jillie Richard, from Horton High School, formed Stage Whispers to give youth a chance to act and produce theatre that speaks to them.
Heathers: The Musical focuses on a mean clique at an Ohio high school. When Veronica Sawyer suddenly becomes popular due to her forgery skills, her world turns upside down. The musical is an adaptation of the cult movie from 1988 starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater and features murder, suicide, sex and violence.
Heathers: The Musical is a fundraiser for various mental health services in the Annapolis Valley.
The show featured 18 actors plus several working behind the scenes to make sure the performances at the Al Whittle Theatre in Wolfville go off without a hitch.
The show stars Laura George, as Veronica Sawyer, Keigan Richard, as J.D. — the mysterious new kid and eventual love interest of Sawyer’s, Jillie Richard, as Heather Chandler — the leader of the Heathers, Lauren McManus, as the bulimic Heather Duke, Maisie Gilbert as the weak-willed Heather McNamara, Max Miller as jock Ram Sweeney and Alex Thomson as jock Kurt Kelly.

Tickets, available at the door and online, are $15. Parental guidance is advised as there is mild language, simulated violence and some disturbing scenes.
