Five people were forced from their homes by a fire near Kentville late Tuesday night.

Kentville firefighters were called to a three-unit apartment house on Lakewood Road in Keddys Corner just after 11:30 p.m. after a tenant in one of the upstairs units reported smoke coming from the basement apartment.

Firefighters extinguished the fire quickly, but the downstairs unit was significantly damaged. The upstairs apartments suffered smoke damage.

New Minas and Waterville firefighters were also called to the scene.

No one was home in the apartment where the fire broke out. One tenant upstairs was taken to hospital for assessment of smoke inhalation. There were no other injuries to tenants but two cats died in the fire.

The Canadian Red Cross was providing temporary help to the tenants.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
