BERWICK, N.S. — The rain held off over Town of Berwick as a crowd gathered to kick off the Canada Day weekend June 29 with the Royally Red and Rockin’ festival at Rainforth Park.
Children were busy enjoying all the event had to offer; face painting, mini games, and water activities filled most of the afternoon. The bounce castle was also quite popular amongst the young crowd. The dreary weather didn’t stop some from using the splash pad for the first time this season.
Regardless of age, everyone was enjoying the free barbecue sponsored by the Town of Berwick.
The grand opening of Carol’s Place - a brand new multi-use building in the park - occurred at 10:30 a.m. The name pays homage to the late Carol Boylan-Hartling, who passed away in April 2018 after a hard-fought battle with cancer.
Boylan-Hartling, a well-loved recreation employee in Berwick, was very passionate about the community, volunteerism and parks and recreation. The new building will primarily be used for youth and after-school programs.
The grand opening was quite emotional, as several speakers thought back to their best memories of Boylan-Hartling. Family, friends, and locals all spoke about how much Boylan-Hartling impacted their lives and the Town of Berwick.
Taylor Boylan, the town’s current recreation co-ordinator, spoke on behalf of the Boylan family and the Town of Berwick.
“Carol loved this small town, and she loved all of you. She was so passionate about making sure everyone had access to programming, and that children’s programming continued in this town. This building will help us do just that.”
Another announcement made at the grand opening event outlined the plans for phase one of the Lewis Chute Bike Park. The park is dedicated to Chute, who was also passionate about community development. The goal is to continue to expand on this bike park in the years to come.
The grand opening was the highlight of the day in Berwick. On June 30, cover band Queen Flash stole the show in the Kings Mutual Century Centre.
