New phone scam targeting Queens County residents

QUEENS COUNTY – The Queens District RCMP is warning residents of another scam circulating the area.
Local residents have recently received calls or voice recordings from someone representing himself as “Officer Williams” and threatening the call recipient or his or her legal counsel to contact the officer at a number provided or unspecified legal action will occur against the call recipient.
The new scam is related to the Canada Revenue scam that has been circulating throughout the province for the past several months.
The numbers provided, 1-778-807-3516 or 778-801-3516 are Vancouver area numbers.
Regardless of the policing agency Officer Williams claims to represent, the call is a scam and residents should not return the call, police warn.
The Queens RCMP suggests that if residents are speaking with Officer Williams, they simply say they are award this is a scam and hang up. Do not provide any personal or financial information and contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at toll free 1-888-495-8501 or online www.antifraudcentre.ca.
Anyone with information should contact the Queens County RCMP detachment at 902-354-5721.
Anyone who wants to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers anytime at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS). Calls to Crime Stoppers are not taped or traced and if police make an arrest and lay charges based on the tip, callers qualify for a cash reward from $50 to $2000. People can also submit secure tips online by logging on to the Crime Stoppers website at www.crimestoppers.ns.ca.
