YARMOUTH, N.S. — A municipal byelection by the Town of Yarmouth to fill the seat left vacant by the death of councillor Sandy Dennis will be held on Saturday, May 18.
Dennis passed away on Feb. 20 from cancer.
During the March 14 town council meeting, there was a short discussion as to whether the byelection should be conducted electronically.
The quote for the electronic voting service is $12,100.
“There might be a cheaper way but it gets the most votes,” said Mayor Mood.
CAO Jeff Gushue agreed.
“We’ve run the last two elections electronically and, generally, I think they went well,” he said.
Deputy Mayor Phil Mooney says he believes Yarmouth was one of the first municipalities in Canada to implement fully electronic voting.
“So taking a step back might not be the best step,” he said.
David Sollows has been appointed as returning officer.
