GREENWOOD, N.S. — A man is facing charges following a car crash where the two occupants of the vehicle fled the scene.

Kings District RCMP responded to a call indicating a car went into the ditch and the driver took off on foot on May 15 shortly after 9 p.m. This occurred on Ward Road in Greenwood Square, which is east of Greenwood. Witnesses told police the driver was impaired by alcohol and one witness tried to stop the driver from driving.

RCMP officers arrived on scene where the vehicle was located in the ditch, but no one was inside. Police were assisted by witnesses who provided information about the location of the occupants.

They found a man and a woman sitting in the ditch near the scene of the collision. The man fled into the woods on foot. The police officer chased him for a short distance and the suspect was arrested without incident.

The woman also fled the area on foot and was located in the ditch on the opposite side of the road from where police initially found the two. EHS was called to check both individuals, as the female was injured. Police offered the male a medical assessment, but he refused. The woman was transported to hospital by ambulance.

The driver of the vehicle, a 27-year-old man from Greenwood, was taken to the Kingston RCMP Detachment for a breath test. His readings were more than twice the legal limit, which is 80 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood. He was placed in cells for the evening.

The man is facing charges of impaired operation of a conveyance causing bodily harm, operation of a conveyance while his blood alcohol concentration exceeded the legal limit and operating an unregistered Vehicle. He is scheduled to appear in Kentville provincial court on July 30.
