Man due back in Digby court in February on firearms offences

DIGBY - A Millbrook man is slated to appear in provincial court in Digby on Feb. 19 on charges stemming from an incident alleged to have occurred in Digby in late November.

Matthew Alexander Cope, 32, of Millbrook, is facing charges of:

• Uttering threats

• Careless use of a firearm

• Pointing a firearm

• Using a firearm in the commission of an offence

• Careless storage of a firearm

• Careless storage of ammunition 

• Unlawful possession of a firearm

• Unlawful possession of a firearm knowing possession is unauthorized.

According to the RCMP, on Nov. 19, 2018, just before 11 p.m., members of the Digby RCMP detachment responded to a complaint that a man had been threatened by another man with a firearm.

The RCMP say the complainant told police that he went to a convenience store on Water Street.

There were two people across the street from him. 

A verbal exchange between the males ensued, and the RCMP say the suspect confronted the victim with a long gun.

The complainant quickly got back in his vehicle and drove straight to the Digby RCMP detachment to report the incident.

The suspect was located and arrested without incident a short time later. He was taken to Digby detachment cells.

A search warrant was obtained for an apartment in Digby, which the RCMP refer to as being the suspect’s. During the search, police say they located a long gun along with ammunition.

At the time of his arrest the man was remanded into custody, taken to Annapolis Provincial Court on Nov. 20, then remanded to Nov. 21. He was later released by the courts on conditions.

His matter also appeared on the docket of provincial court in Digby on Jan. 10.

The February court appearance is set for election and plea.
