YARMOUTH - After close to a week delay due to weather, the lobster fishery in southwestern Nova Scotia and along the province’s south shore got underway. Vessels leaving Yarmouth Harbour received a traditional sendoff from supporters who made the early morning trip to Cape Forchu Lighthouse. Dozens of people lined the cliffs shining lights, snapping photos and in some cases trying to identify their loved ones boats as they sailed out to sea with traps piled high to the stern.
Around 5,000 fishers are on the boats, departing from wharfs lining the coastline communities.
