HARBOURVILLE, NS - Thanks to the quick thinking and heroic actions of some nearby workers, a fire in a Harbourville home was extinguished before firefighters arrived on the scene.
A call for emergency assistance came in to the Berwick Fire Department around 2:45 p.m. on Feb. 16. Berwick Fire Chief Laurie Saunders said workers who happened to be next door at a residence on Long Point Road noticed smoke coming from the single-storey home, ran over and put the fire out.
Saunders hadn’t had a chance to thoroughly evaluate the damages and wasn’t able to estimate the value but did confirm that the fire was confined to the kitchen. He said the cause had yet to be determined.
“What we’re doing is just making sure that all extensions are done and there’s no fire left and then we’ll go from there,” Saunders said.
There were no injuries. The chief said the owner wasn’t home at the time, as he’d just left to pick his son up from the school bus stop.
“Good neighbours did their job,” Saunders said. “It’s a good day.”
The Aylesford and Waterville and District Fire Departments automatically responded as part of the Kings County mutual aid system. Saunders said they were turned back from the scene after it was determined that the fire had been contained.
