YARMOUTH, N.S. – The RCMP are still investigating a five-vehicle collision that took place on Highway 103 in Yarmouth County on Monday, April 9.

At 4:03 p.m. the Yarmouth Rural RCMP responded to the collision on Highway 103, that occurred in a construction zone area of Eel Lake/Belleville. The area falls between exits 33 and 32.

“We don't know what happened yet and the matter is under investigation,” RCMP Corporal Jennifer Clarke said on Tuesday.

“Several people were injured and were transported to hospital as a result of this collision,” she said. The people transported to hospital had varying levels of injury, according to the RCMP. Cpl. Clarke couldn’t say for certain how many people were transported.

“We're glad to report that there were no fatalities as a result of this collision,” she said.

None of the construction workers who were present at the scene were injured, the RCMP said.

According to an RCMP media release, the RCMP were on scene until approximately 6:30 p.m. Highway 103 was closed during that time as police worked to determine the sequence of events that led to the collision. Present on the scene to attend to the injured, and/or to investigate the incident, were RCMP members from Yarmouth town and rural detachments, EHS and volunteer fire departments.

The Tri-County Vanguard has contacted the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal for information about the construction that has been underway and the timeframe for completion of the project. At the time of this posting we had not yet received that information. We will update when we do.
