KENTVILLE, NS - A North Kentville man will serve a federal custodial sentence after pleading guilty to charges of possessing drugs for the purpose of trafficking.

Richard Arthur Alexander MacInnis-Hines, 24, changed his pleas to guilty in October to charges of possessing cocaine for the purpose of trafficking and possessing cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

He maintained not guilty pleas to charges of possessing LSD and possessing psilocybin – magic mushrooms – for the purpose of trafficking but pleaded guilty to the lesser, included offence of possession on both charges. The matters were adjourned to Dec. 18 for sentencing.

Judge Alan Tufts sentenced MacInnis-Hines to two years and six months in custody for possessing cocaine for the purpose of trafficking and fined him $200 in victim surcharges. The court imposed a 12-year, six-month firearm prohibition against him and granted a DNA order.

The court reserved jurisdiction to determine forfeiture in relation to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act charge and the matter was adjourned for an upcoming forfeiture hearing.

MacInnis-Hines was sentenced to six months in custody, to be served concurrently, and was fined $200 in victim surcharges for possessing cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

He was fined $230 on each of the possession charges, for a total of $460, but the accused will instead serve the default time concurrently.

MacInnis-Hines was also charged with possessing cannabis resin for the purpose of trafficking but the charge was dismissed on Dec. 18.

Charges against a co-accused, Vanessa Ann Coleman, 21, of North Kentville, were dismissed on Dec. 18 with the Crown offering no evidence.
