The victim of a motorcycle crash in Lower Sackville on Tuesday has been identified by his junior hockey team as Sackville Blazers player Andrew Picot.
“It is one of the darkest and coldest feelings to have to say goodbye to a great hockey player, teammate, a brother, a friend and family member way too soon,” the junior B team posted on its Facebook page Wednesday.
“On behalf of the Sackville Blazers family, we are thinking of Andrew’s family and friends and you will remain in our hearts and thoughts.”
In an emailed statement, Blazers coach and general manager Dwight Dempster shared his thoughts about Picot, a 19-year-old graduate of Sackville High School who joined the team in September 2018.
“Andrew was an intelligent, well-spoken and driven young man,” Dempster said.
“When speaking to Andrew, he had big inquisitive eyes that spoke of his desire to learn. Andrew’s large smile was an indication of his great sense of humour.
“Above all else, Andrew overflowed with character that showed in all aspects of his life.”
He said Picot’s teammates gathered in the club’s dressing room after the accident to share stories and grieve together.
“(Through) the conversation, it was clear that Andrew was well respected, a great teammate, a greater friend and very close to his family,” Dempster said.
“As coaches, we were pushed by Andrew to be better and we are extremely grateful and honored to have been a small part of his life.”
RCMP, who have not officially identified the driver, said he was alone on the motorbike when it crashed on Cobequid Road shortly before 6 p.m.
The road was closed for about about six hours while police conducted their investigation.
