Middleton to call special election to fill seat left vacant by Brad Reid

Brad Reid was sworn in as a Middleton councillor by then CAO Rachel Turner on Nov. 7, 2016 at a special council meeting following province-wide municipal elections. Reid is no longer a councillor because his job has taken him outside town limits for longer than an allowable six-month time span. A special election to fill the vacant seat is expected to be called for March 30.

MIDDLETON, NS - Residents of Middleton may be going to the polls before the end of March as council is expected to call a special election to fill the council seat left vacant by Brad Reid.

Reid, who was elected in October of 2016 during provincewide municipal elections, moved outside town limits because of job requirements, said Mayor Sylvester Atkinson.

At its Jan. 21 meeting, council is expected to set the election date for March 30, said CAO Jenn Boyd.

Reid was a first-time councillor, and a good one according to the mayor.

“Brad was an excellent councillor,” said Atkinson. “He was on leave for six months which is the maximum we could allow.”

Atkinson said he’d hoped that Reid would be back within that six months but that didn’t happen.

“I guess his job required that he couldn’t and his term ended,” the mayor said. “He was a great councilor and was always willing to look at all aspects of issues. So now we have to have a special election.”

Besides Atkinson, remaining councillors are Melinda den Haan, Gail Smith, Michael Fairn, Clayton MacMurtry, Gary Marshall.
