KENTVILLE, NS - A Newtonville Road man has been fined after pleading guilty to charges relating to a Melanson slaughter house laid under the provincial Meat Inspection Act.
William Berton Reid was present in Kentville Provincial Court on Feb. 12 and pleaded guilty to five charges contrary to the Meat Inspection Regulations made pursuant to the Meat Inspection Act, Nova Scotia.
The charges include failing to have his red meat and poultry plant adequately heated; failing to equip the red meat and poultry plant’s kill floor with knife sterilizer; failing to keep the floors, walls and ceilings of the plant clean, sanitary and in good repair; failing to keep rails, racks and hooks clean, sanitary and in good repair; and failing to comply with a direction issued by an inspector on Nov. 14, 2018.
On Feb. 12, Judge Rhonda Van Der Hoek fined Reid $812.50 for failing to comply with a direction issued by an inspector. Reid was fined $295 on each of the other four charges, for a total of $1,992.50 in fines.
Reid committed the offences in Melanson between Nov. 26 and 28, 2018. A charge of failing to have a poultry plant adequately heated, a charge of failing to equip a poultry plant kill floor with knife sterilizer and a charge of failing to keep a toilet room clean and sanitary were withdrawn on Feb.12.
