KENTVILLE, NS – A Kentville man facing charges following a public altercation in the downtown on March 1 has been released from custody.

Steven Gerald Maynard, 25, is charged with aggravated assault and carrying a weapon for a purpose dangerous to the public peace. Maynard was present in Kentville provincial court in custody on March 5. Following a bail hearing, he was released on a $1,000 non-cash recognizance with conditions and a surety. Maynard’s matters have been adjourned to March 27 for election and plea.

Kentville Police Service members were called to Webster Street shortly after 9 a.m. on March 1 to assist with a dispute involving three men. Chief Julia Cecchetto said in a news release that when police arrived, a 29-year-old male victim was located suffering from non-life-threatening knife wounds. He was transported to Valley Regional Hospital for treatment. Cecchetto said the parties involved were known to one another and it wasn’t a random act.

Around 9:40 a.m. on March 1, several drops of blood were visible on the sidewalk between the Centre Square Tim Hortons and the nearby CIBC and officers could be seen gathering information in the area.

The 25-year-old suspect was found on Prospect Avenue. He was arrested and made an initial court appearance later in the day.
