FALMOUTH, N.S. — FALMOUTH, N.S. – Losing garages and ATVs in a fire is never a good thing, but thanks to some quick thinking by the homeowner and neighbour, they likely helped to save the nearby home.
Just after 5 a.m. on June, a fire broke out at a garage at a property on the 600 block of Town Road in Falmouth, before spreading to a second, neighbouring garage.
The next door neighbour was stirred after hearing a loud noise and called 911.
Paul Maynard, deputy chief with the Hantsport Fire Department said the homeowner and neighbour attempted to control the blaze as much as possible before they arrived, using gardening hoses to keep the flames away from the home.
He said that their efforts likely prevented the flames from spreading to the house, keeping it isolated to the garages.
Hantsport, Windsor and Brooklyn were called to the scene while Wolfville assisted by covering Hantsport through mutual aid.
There were approximately 30 firefighters on scene and 5 pieces of apparatus, Maynard said.
Firefighters arrived at a fully engulfed garage, extending to a second two car garage on a neighbouring property.
The flames also melted some of the siding on the house.
The fire was brought under control within 15 minutes, but firefighters remained on scene for about 1.5 hours, dealing with hotspots and overhaul. The road was partially blocked while firefighters were on scene.
Maynard said there was lots of equipment in both garages, including three ATVs, which were destroyed.
EHS and RCMP also attended the scene, but no injuries were reported.
Maynard said the fire remains under investigation.
Both buildings destroyed by the fire were insured.
