KENTVILLE – Firefighters are battling a house fire on MacDonald Park Road.
The Kentville Volunteer Fire Department was called to investigate a “possible structure fire” in a two-storey, brick house in Kentville around 2 p.m. Feb. 1.
An initial 360 assessment at the scene revealed there was smoke showing on all sides of the home, which is a two-story house with brown brick and pale blue siding at the rear, and additional departments were dispatched to assist with the working structure fire.
There are multiple departments fighting the blaze – Kentville, New Minas, Canning and Waterville confirmed – and Nova Scotia Power and local police have also responded to the call, along with EHS teams.
The fire was confirmed to have started in the basement.
A Kings County News reporter at the scene can see thick smoke rolling out of the windows and surrounding the building. Firefighters have gained access to the interior of the home, and brought an aerial truck to the scene.
Crews entered the house at 3 p.m. and were called out at 3:40, and firefighters kept battling the fire from outside.
Fire broke through the roof of the home at 3:45 p.m.
The aerial truck was used, with two firefighters using a chainsaw to cut through the roof.
Hoses were fired at the fire from all sides of the house, through the roof and second-story windows.
Shingles flew off the roof as the hoses blasted water at the fire.
A source at the scene who is known to the homeowners says the family is not home.
The house is located in a subdivision across from Memorial Park.
It is not yet confirmed whether the house is a total loss, but extensive indoor and outdoor damage was evident at the scene.
Firefighters remain on the scene and are investigating possible sources for the fire.
