BRIDGETOWN, N.S. — Annapolis District RCMP had another busy week with numerous accidents, break-ins, slashed tires, a suspicious house fire, and a pot-smoking driver.
Tragically, a 17-year-old Bridgetown girl died of injuries after her car left the road in icy conditions.
Following are some of the calls to which RCMP responded between Jan. 28 and Feb. 3:
Jan. 28, 2019
MIDDLETON – A hit-and-run was reported. While the owner of the vehicle was in a local business, the caller reported seeing a truck hit a parked vehicle and then immediately leave the scene. The quick-thinking caller was able take a picture of the truck and license plate -- good work! The suspect has been identified and the investigation is ongoing.

MIDDLETON – RCMP responded to a car versus school bus collision. Fortunately, no kids were on the bus and no injuries to the drivers. Due to the glare from the sun, the driver stated, they could not see the school bus in front.
MIDDLETON – An on-line money scam was reported. The complainant reported sending a couple of installments of large sums of money to a man she met on-line who was going to send the money to a friend in Syria who needed it. Prior to considering any such charitable actions, please give us a call and we’ll be happy to look into this and advise its authenticity.
NICTAUX – A caller reported someone tried to enter her house via the basement entrance over night. RCMP attended the scene. No entry had been gained, there were no foot prints around, and no damage to the door. There’s a strong possibility the wind had blown the door open.
MIDDLETON – RCMP received a call from a complainant stating that someone was looking in her window. The officer made a patrol but could not locate anyone in the area. He ensured the caller’s doors were locked properly and alarm system was activated. Let us know of suspicious activities in your neighbourhood – we’re happy to check things out.
Jan. 30, 2019
GRAYWOOD – RCMP responded to a motor vehicle collision. The officer noted the road conditions were very poor due to ice, rain, and snow. The driver was negotiating a turn when it hit some ice. There was minor damage to the vehicle and the driver was taken by EHS and treated for injuries.
NICTAUX – A caller reported that sometime overnight someone slashed the tires on her vehicle. RCMP are requesting the public with any information on this incident, to please contact the Annapolis District RCMP.
MOUNT HANLEY – Another motor vehicle crash due to poor road conditions was reported. The SUV hit black ice and landed in the ditch. Both occupants had minor injuries but were luckily not seriously hurt.
CLEMENTSPORT – Yes, another motor vehicle accident. A blue Dodge Caliber was in the ditch across from the caller’s home. RCMP attended but did not find anyone in the vehicle. There was no plate on the vehicle and the RCMP officer confirmed the vehicle had not been registered since 2016. Message to owner: you may have your car back once you provide proof of registration and insurance. Oh, and pay Mr. Tow-man.

PARADISE – Winter weather contributed to a head-on collision in which both involved vehicles required towing and one of the drivers was transported to the hospital for minor injuries, treated, and released. On the way the responding officer, driving with due care and attention, emergency lights activated, apparently wasn’t going fast enough for the fellow behind who seemed to think tailgating might resolve the matter. A ticket for $237.50 under Section 117 of the Motor Vehicle Act for ‘Following too Closely,’ might suggest otherwise next time round.

MIDDLETON – In the early morning hours, minutes after a residential alarm alerted RCMP to a possible break-and-enter, officers followed fresh boot tracks from the kicked-in door. This led them to have a frank conversation with an individual close by who, coincidently, happened to be sporting an exact boot match to said tracks. Several items found on the arrested subject tied him in with thefts from nearby vehicles. Suffice to say, our RCMP Bridgetown cell was occupied for the weekend and numerous charges have been laid. CLARENCE WEST – Police received reports of a house on fire. The RCMP was able to locate the home owner who was safe. The fire appears suspicious and the investigation is ongoing. The RCMP are requesting the public with any info, to please contact the RCMP.

MIDDLETON – While RCMP officers were conducting a Check Point, a vehicle approached the officers shrouded in a mushroom cloud of marijuana smoke. An oral fluid swab was administered to the driver which came back positive for THC. The driver was arrested for impaired operation and the investigation remains open. The RCMP would like to remind the public that while it is now legal to smoke marijuana, it is illegal to smoke in a moving vehicle. If you are stopped and you are impaired, you will face similar consequences as impairment by alcohol.

CENTRELEA – A single motor vehicle accident was reported. A 17-year-old girl from Bridgetown died later from her injuries. Slippery roads were a factor in this incident and our thoughts are with the family at this tragic time.
