BRIDGETOWN, N.S. - Escaped cows, bulls, donkeys, horses and dogs -- everything but a partridge in a pear tree for the Annapolis District RCMP this week. There was also a lottery ticket dispute, a collision with an excavator, and a break-in at Temple on Queen – again.
Following are highlights from Oct. 1 to 8:
Oct. 1, 2018
-- Annapolis District RCMP responded to Clementsport for a property damage call. The well head was smashed, oil was missing, and there was damage to an oil tank. RCMP have seized video footage and the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with any information on this incident is asked to contact the Annapolis District RCMP.
-- In Meadowvale, the RCMP were dispatched to horses running back and forth on the road. The horses apparently had kicked the fence boards off and escaped. The responding officer asked the owner why horses might cross the road. It appears when someone saw them on the road and yelled ‘hay!’ and the horses naturally thought it was meal time!
-- The RCMP is reminding the public that an amber light does not mean speed up and go faster. Failing to stop at amber light when able to stop safely will result in a fine under 93(2)(c) of the Motor Vehicle Act, $180.
-- The driver of a black jeep failed to obey traffic signage and common sense prior to driving into an apartment building in Middleton. The residents were awoken and reported same to police. The vehicle left the scene. The investigation continues.
-- Again, the Annapolis District RCMP would like to remind folks it’s imperative, and not a suggestion, that one possess a valid driver’s license when driving a car! More tickets were issued to drivers again on this day for operating a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license. The fine is $295.
Oct. 2, 2018
-- A landlord from Upper Clements reported that when a tenant vacated, a couple items vanished that did not belong to said tenant -- like a water heater and washing machine! The landlord will be adding these items to the tenant’s final bill!
-- RCMP responded to a dispute at a store in Middleton. The caller reported an unknown male being belligerent. The RCMP spoke to the male who was upset because he felt he was short-changed a lotto ticket. The RCMP opened up an investigation and viewed video footage. Apparently the staff member did accidentally short-change him by one ticket. The additional ticket was issued and the hopeful millionaire left on foot.
-- The RCMP would like to remind the public that stopping or parking where prohibited by sign will result in a charge under sec 143(1)(1) of the Motor Vehicle Act. It’s a fine of $61.60 as this driver found out when he parked his car where it clearly stated one shouldn’t.
-- In Bridgetown, the RCMP responded to a motorcyclist riding up and down the road without a helmet. Failing to wear a helmet is not very sensible and for a first offence can be a fine up to $147.
Oct. 3, 2018
-- A car versus excavator collision happened in Granville Ferry. The driver of a car was heading east through a construction zone as the excavator was turning its tracks. The excavator ended up hitting the driver’s car and causing some damage.
Oct. 4, 2018
-- There was yet another break-in at the Queen on Temple in Bridgetown. Entry was gained through the window. RCMP are requesting again, for the public to be vigilant in reporting any suspicious activities in the area. This business has had several break-ins since the summer.
-- Two cows on the loose in Port George were reported. The responding officer located the cows and did a fine job of playing cowhand. The owner stated a tree knocked down the fence allowing these escape artists a brief glimpse of the wider world.
-- A caller from Deep Brook reported damage to a farm gate. He had specifically put this gate up on his property to prevent ATV riders from trespassing. Unfortunately, at night, the ATV driver was unaware and did not see the gate and drove into it. Tickets under the Off Road Vehicle Act will be issued. First time offences can be anywhere between $250 to $750.
-- Theft of a barbecue was reported in Bridgetown. RCMP remind the public in the Bridgetown area of the following safe practices when away:
* Have a timer for your lights
* Have someone check in on your property
* Keep lawn and yard maintained
* Report any suspicious activity to the police
-- There was another ATV complaint, this time in Wilmot with a driver performing wheelies driving down the road. Patrols were made but the vehicle left down a trail and was unable to be stopped.
-- The RCMP responded to a motor vehicle collision in Carleton Corner. The driver crashed into a tree and was transported to hospital. The subject was later released and was fortunately not seriously injured.
-- Suspicious youths were reported in Middleton. The caller stated that several youths were in the parking lot by the pool smashing cell phones. Knowing how much kids will instantly cease to exist without electronic devices, it seemed very strange they would be smashing them up! Patrols were made but the youths were not located.
Oct. 5, 2018
-- A break-in into a home in Meadowvale was reported. The suspect broke into the home and trashed a bedroom. Several items were stolen including jewelry and coins. The investigation remains open and ongoing.
-- Online phone and email scams continue in Annapolis District. One such complainant received a email from a company alleged to be Premium Techie Support advising that the homeowner had a virus on their computer. The RCMP are reminding folks about ongoing scams and to never provide personal information or credit card particulars to any unknown and/or/first time caller. Suspicious emails or phone calls can be reported immediately to 1-888-495-8501, Canada Anti Fraud.
Oct. 6, 2018
-- A motor vehicle collision at Gouchers Farmers Market in Wilmot resulted in the RCMP attending. Vehicle #1 was travelling east on Highway 1 when the vehicle ahead slowed down and turned on to Stronach Mountain Road. Vehicle #1 was able to stop in time, but the motorbike behind it was not so lucky and hit vehicle #1, causing the driver of bike to lose balance and fall off. There were minor injuries and damage.
-- RCMP responded to a stubborn donkey in the ditch by a road. It was the escape week for animals because he managed to break out of a fenced yard too! The officer responded and got a ‘kick’ out of the donkey as he wandered off into the woods back home.
Oct. 7, 2018
-- A resident in Lawrencetown was awoken at 2 a.m. to a large ‘boom’ sound from across the street. When she looked out, she saw a vehicle on fire.
-- Shortly after, the RCMP responded to another fire, this time to a residential fire in Beaconsfield. The RCMP assisted in securing the scene for the Fire Marshal. Both investigations are ongoing and RCMP are requesting that if members of the public have any info on either event, please contact Annapolis District RCMP.
-- A lose German Sheppard was reported in Middleton. A patrol was made by the RCMP but the dog was not located. Rumours were he was making his way to the “flea” market.
-- What do you do when you misplace a cow, a bull, and a calf? Call the Annapolis District RCMP! In Paradise, this trio was reported walking the roadway and the caller was worried about a vehicle possibly hitting them. It appears they escaped too. The animals were rounded up and safely herded home.
