CANNING - An altercation that resulted in police being called to the Northeast Kings Education Centre is under investigation.
RCMP were dispatched to the Canning-based school to respond to a complaint of an assault taking place shortly after 12:30 p.m. Feb. 7.
“A 17-year-old male student and a 16-year-old male student were involved in an altercation resulting in injuries to the 17-year-old,” said Kings District RCMP Const. Jeff Wilson in a prepared statement Feb. 8.
“The 17-year-old was taken to hospital for treatment of what is believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.”
Wilson declined to offer any specifics relating to the incident.
“The matter is still under investigation. This fact, combined with the ages of the students, will not allow us to release further information at this time,” he said in an email.
Scanner reports indicated paramedics were also called to the scene to examine a head injury.
Annapolis Valley Regional Centre for Education spokeswoman Kristen Loyst refrained from disclosing additional details relating to the altercation.
“I’m unable to discuss details about specific school incidents for privacy reasons, but I can let you know that unacceptable behaviour incidents are taken very seriously,” said Loyst via email Feb. 8.
“In responding to an unacceptable behaviour incident at a school, a principal’s actions are guided by the Provincial School Code of Conduct Policy.”
