LIVERPOOL – Although the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 38’s ladies’ auxiliary in Liverpool has a number of volunteers, Sandy Cross says it would welcome some more.

“Our main function is to help the parent branch raise funds to do their work for the veterans of Queens County,” explains Cross.

Additionally, the auxiliary donates to the Salvation Army, Cancer Society and IWK. The women sponsor a foster child, which they give money to monthly. They also do the month of May birthday for the Queens Manor each year.

The group also gives a $500 bursary to a high school graduate who has a mother, grandmother or great-grandmother in the ladies’ auxiliary.

To raise money, the ladies’ auxiliary does monthly TGIFs and banquets. The next TGIF is set to take place March 2.

“TGIF is always (a) full turkey dinner,” said Cross.

Cross says at one time auxiliary members had to be a sibling of a veteran, but that’s no longer the case. But volunteers do have to be 19 years or older to join.

Meetings take place the third Wednesday of each month beginning at 1:30 p.m. At meetings, auxiliary members decide who will work at upcoming TGIFs and banquets.

“When Carol gets a membership application, she brings it to one meeting, and the very next meeting we install that member, and that member will get a pin and a crest to put on their jacket,” said Cross.
