A man who was briefly treated at hospital after his Digby County house was gutted by fire is getting some help from the Canadian Red Cross.

The fire, on Jordantown Road, a few kilometres south of Digby, was reported Friday around 3 p.m.

Red Cross volunteers were in touch with the man on Saturday and arranged emergency lodging, as well as food and clothing purchases, the Red Cross said in a news release.

Robert Morgan, the Digby fire chief, said when firefighters arrived, they were told there was still someone in the burning structure, but this turned out not to be the case.

Four fire departments responded: Digby, Bear River, Smith’s Cove and Brighton-Barton.

Asked about the condition of the house, Morgan said, “The first floor’s still standing, but the second floor collapsed into the first floor, roof and all.”

The cause of the fire is undetermined, he said.

There was no insurance and there will be no investigation, he said.
