EAGLE HEAD - Stephen Bowers has taken warning people about road conditions into his own hands.
Bowers, a lifelong Eagle Head resident, recently made half a dozen caution signs to warn drivers about potholes in his community and surrounding areas. The signs have yellow and red backgrounds and say, ‘Caution: 20 yr potholes ahead.’
“The road’s full of potholes, grass, you name it. It’s not fit to drive on,” said Bowers.
The road is not safe to drive on either, he added.
“You’re always fixing the front of your truck because it gets beat out,” said Bowers.
Bowers said the potholes add an extra challenge in the winter because not all the snow gets plowed properly.
He contacted the Department of Highways on Nov. 9 and was asked to remove his signs because it’s posted on the department’s property. Before putting signs up, he has to go through official channels, he explained. He said he plans to take the necessary steps to put his signs back up.
Bowers said everyone he’s spoken with in affected communities - such as Brooklyn, Beach Meadows, East Berlin and West Berlin - supports him with the signs.
The idea for the signs came to Bowers following a visit to Newfoundland in the summer. There were lots of similar signs, he said.
