LIVERPOOL – For over five years, Astor Theatre in Liverpool has been offering a series of youth summer drama camps. This summer is no exception.
Starting on May 1, registration will open for a two-week senior camp for ages 13 to 17, which runs from July 2 to 13, and a one-week junior camp for ages nine to 12, running from July 16 to 20.
These intensive drama camps, run by Elizabeth Peterson and her siblings, all of whom have professional degrees in theatre arts, aim to expose kids to the arts and to help nurture young artists, says Andrew Bursey, general manager and co-artistic director of the Astor Theatre.
Throughout the week, participants will gain many skills like communication and problem solving, alongside the fundamental skills of theatre, movement, writing and acting, says Bursey.
At the end of each camp, Bursey says there will be a full-on performance. It is written by the participants during the camp and performed for the public at the end of the week.
“Everyone loves the camps,” says Bursey. “There is a waiting list to get in, it's so popular.”
Parents can register, starting May 1, by calling the box office at 902-354-5250 from Tuesday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Or, send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org to request a registration form. Registration is on a first come first served basis. Spots will not be reserved before the May 1 date. Space is limited to 30 participants per camp.
“We are preparing the next generation of performers,” says Bursey. “Giving them an opportunity to explore their talents and conquer their fears.”
