ARLINGTON, P.E.I. — Two sisters from Arlington are packing their bags and are ready to celebrate a national food recipe contest for kids in Toronto.

Addison and Chloe MacAusland, members of the Boys and Girls Club of Summerside, were two of 26 winners of the Kid Food Nation national recipe contest for kids aged seven to 13.

The siblings will show off their original healthy winning recipes to well-known Canadians at the Kid Food Nation gala, hosted by YTV’s (television channel) Suki and Spencer. Their recipes, that highlight their culture (or Canadian pride), will be featured in the Kid Food Nation cookbook, set to be distributed nationwide this fall. This is the second time Addison has won the contest.

Addison, aged 10, said the first recipe she tried was “baking muffins and they turned out good” while acknowledging her grandmother is her cooking inspiration.

“She decorates cakes, so I want to learn how to decorate cakes,” said Addison.

Her key ingredient that paved the way to the win was a humble spud.

“You use the potato skin of the white potato. It is special because I made it up. I like both sweet potatoes and white potatoes, so I put them together,” she said while explaining her recipe that celebrates the farming nature of P.E.I. and it’s world famous potatoes.

Chloe, aged 8, said her cooking inspiration is her sister Addison.

“Because Addison won the first Kid Food Nation contest,” Chloe chimed in.

Chloe’s winning recipe was a healthy watermelon smoothie.

“I thought of it because I like smoothies and I like watermelon, so I wanted to put them together.”

The duo will represent the province with pride as they celebrate their accomplishment alongside Canada’s youngest chefs-to-be at the Omni King Edward hotel in Toronto on Sunday, Nov. 10.

President’s Choice Children’s Charity supports the program, which teaches kids cooking skills, gets them excited about healthy food, and gives them the tools to live a healthier and happier life.
