YARMOUTH, N.S. —

On July 26, harpist Saeed Foroughi and Sandra Phinney will take part in an ongoing, international musical collaboration that celebrates the life and work of 13th-century Sufi mystic Rumi.

The Silk Road Project was founded in 1998 by cellist Yo-Yo Ma, in an effort to share art and education across borders and genres.

In 2009, Ma requested that artists around the world create music celebrating the life and spirit of Rumi on the 800th anniversary of his death. Saeed Foroughi, (known as Saeed) was only too happy to answer this call.

Sandra Phinney will be reciting Rumi's poetry, complemented by Saeed's music on harp, flute, hammer dulcimer and setar.

“We hope that the performance will give the gleam of universality of Rumi's poetry and his life and believe that the compositions will reflect on the unity of the world, which is the most essential prerequisite for world peace," said Saeed.

The event will take place at the Yarmouth County Museum, 22 Collins St. on July 26, with doors opening at 6 p.m. for the concert at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 from the museum. Call 902-742-5539.
