CANNING, N.S. — Canning musician Kim Barlow is bringing a musical series to her home community that will run until mid-September.
“We are thrilled to announce a music series that will happen every Saturday all summer in our beautiful village,” she said.
Barlow moved to Canning in 2013 from Yukon and she’s teamed up for this musical adventure with fellow Yukon ex-pats, Mike and Alice Hartling. The Hartlings recently opened the coffee house.
“We have a full line-up of wildly talented musicians booked through the summer and we can’t wait to share this great music with you,” Barlow noted.
Shows will start with a revolving house band featuring Barlow and members of the Dearlies, Ida Red, and Acadia faculty members Mark Adam and Nic D’Amato.
“We will play a set of traditional Maritime music reinterpreted, fun sing-alongs and familiar anthems,” Barlow said. “The guests will play a set, and then we’ll have a jam session, open to all, and go as late as we want.”
This is a kitchen party to celebrate the rich musical traditions found in the Maritimes, she promises.
“I’ve worked on making it a multi-cultural lineup, with lots of locals from Canning and nearby. Lots of fun. There are so many,” Barlow said. “We’ll kick off the series on June 1 with a collaboration featuring Mika Francis and Cristian Quirivan.”
Mika Francis is an advocate from the Acadia First Nation, who is studying social services at NSCC Kingstec, where she is the president of the L'nuek Alliance and of the Kingstec Student Association.
She drums with the Melgita't Women drum group, who have drummed on stage with JUNO award winners Jim Cuddy and William Prince.
Cristian Quirivan is from Chile and plays the folk music of the Andes on traditional South American instruments such as wood flutes, pan flutes and stringed instruments like the charango and the cuatro.
The Dearlies will be the house band to launch the series, with the sweet harmonies of Rebecca MacDonald, Jenny and Meagan Osburn, Barlow on banjo, Peter Williams on bass and Sarah Mcinnis on fiddle.

Tickets are $10 for the concerts and will be available at the door. Kids are admitted for free.
