BARRINGTON, NS – More than 25 vendors and presenters, including guest speaker Michael Bull Roberts, are being brought together for the free Mental Health Wellness Expo, One More Light, being held at the Barrington Regional Curling Club on Sept. 22.

Co-organized and sponsored by the recently formed Because We Care Fund and the Shelburne County Mental Health and Wellness Association, One More Light opens at 11 a.m. and runs until 9 p.m.

The Expo “is all to do with health and wellness and relaxation,” said Amelie Daykin, Because We Care treasurer. Support professionals, health coaches, inspirational speakers, yoga, massage – “anything that we could find that was available to help with de-stressing someone’s emotions and feelings” – is being brought together for the event, where people can explore ways of improving mental wellness through sound, relaxing, and taking time for themselves.

Mental health is an issue “we’re very passionate about,” said Daykin. “Addiction and mental health are issues in the area and this is why we wanted to do something that would hopefully have an impact on some people.”

The One More Light Expo is the latest project of the Because We Care Fund, which was formed last fall after Kimberley Goreham-Waybret, Gina Symonds, and Amelie Daykin attended a charitable event of the 100+ Women of Shelburne County.

“We began discussing the needs of those in our community that would benefit from a helping hand,” said Daykin. A non-profit organization was formed, with a focus to help seniors, children, and persons who are disabled who are needing a helping hand whether it is financial, supportive or emotional.

By investing their own personal money, collecting donations and undertaking fundraisers, it didn’t take long for the Because We Care Fund to start lending a charitable hand in the community, helping out five families at Christmas time with food and for one, toys for all the children, visiting seniors to deliver goodies and visit, and giving out gift cards for groceries to people who needed it.

In the new year Because We Care decided to help seniors who needed help filling prescriptions, said Daykin. The group approached the local drug stores in the Municipality of Barrington, talked to the pharmacists and said if there was a senior who can not pay for their prescriptions they would pay it for them.

“We’ve been doing a lot of that. We’ve probably helped at least a dozen people.”

Adopting a family at Christmas time, providing turkey dinner with all the fixings to five families, visiting seniors to deliver a Christmas cookie basket, donating to the school meal program, providing a $300 bursary to a BMHS graduate and sending children to Camp Jordan whose parents have a modest income and can’t afford to send their kids to camp, are the other goals of the group this year.

“We just want to help wherever we can,” said Daykin. “We’re dedicated to serving our communities by giving a helping hand to those that need it from time to time.” All donations go directly into the Because We Care Fund and receipts are provided.
