KENTVILLE, N.S. – Laughter is no joke at K-Town Comedy Club, which has been open for one year and already pulled in acts including well-known comic Nikki Payne.
Comedian and club owner Marc Sauvé started the new venture in May 2017 when he needed a last-minute venue for a show with late comedian Mike MacDonald.
Sauvé had been to Paddy’s Irish Brewpub and Rosie’s Restaurant before, and recalled the large upstairs space with comedy-convenient angles. It all immediately struck him as an “amazing room for comedy.”
After speaking with pub owner Brian FitzGerald, the two struck a partnership and the K-Town Comedy Club was born.
“It was already a comedy club built in that space, and we sold out the Mike MacDonald show. It was a great reception, and we’ve continued doing well,” says Sauvé.
He describes the cabaret-style comedy club as one of the “last bastions of free speech in the arts,” and says the audience not only gets to enjoy hilarious shows, but off-the-cuff, uncensored content.
Sauvé says this, along with an open-minded audience and some great food and beer, add up to equal a true stand-up comedy experience.
“You’re ten feet from the comics, you’ve got nachos on your table – it’s the Wild West of comedy,” he says.
Since the show with MacDonald, the club has booked Payne and other comedians like Jay Malone and James Mullinger and will soon host Garrett Clark Jan. 18 and 19. It also recently sold out a New Year’s Eve event.
Sauvé says he’s thrilled the club – he calls it his “labour of love” – is thriving and is bringing comedy to many Kentville residents who’ve never experienced a live stand-up show.
“There’s a cool little vibe in that downtown core. There are a lot of new businesses that are opening up, and a lot of people working hard to make that happen – that downtown core a great place,” he says.
“I think that years from now, we’ll look at this time as a fun destination.”
He’s spent the last 25 years in comedy and owned a Yuk Yuks franchise in Halifax before selling it in 2009 and founding the charitable Funny Fundraisers initiative in Bedford.
With over two decades spent making people laugh, Sauvé says his business is no laughing matter – it’s a surefire thing that people will have fun during a night out at the K-Town Comedy Club.
“When that family, that husband and wife get out for that one night a month without their kids, I take pride that if they come to the K-Town Comedy Club, they’re going to have a great time,” says Sauvé.
The club hosts shows the third weekend of each month, and offers free tickets to people during their birthday month.
