YARMOUTH, NS – The annual Eastern Canadian Fisheries Exposition is back at the Mariner’s Centre in Yarmouth on Jan 25 and 26 with a full line up of seminars, exhibitors and events on tap.
The show opens at 10 a.m. both days, running until 5 p.m. on Friday and 4 p.m. on Saturday. Among the show highlights is the announcement of this year’s three new inductees in the categories of Mariner, Processor, and Builder into the Atlantic Canada Marine Industries Hall of Fame, joining a prestigious group of 50 previous recipients from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward, and Newfoundland from the past 10 years. The ceremony will take place at 2:30 pm on Friday.
The following inductees will be honoured:
• Brian Adams from Cape George, Antigonish County (Mariner)
• Jean Guy d'Entremont from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia (Processor)
• John Hines from Central Argyle, Nova Scotia (Builder)
Five seminars are also part of the expo. The first one, Safety at Sea: a Wave of Change, presented by the Fisheries Safety Association of Nova Scotia takes place on Friday starting at 11 a.m. At 1:30 p.m. the Atlantic Fisheries Fund is the seminar focus, and at 3:30 p.m. the Coldwater Lobster Association will present a preliminary review of the findings and overall experience during the at-sea trials of Desert Star's acoustic release technology (ropeless fishing technology) for lobster trawl fishing.
On Saturday starting at 11 a.m., Belliveau Veinotte Inc. Chartered Professional Accountants will present a seminar on Tax Planning Strategies for Fishers with DFO Regulations in Mind. The presentation will include an overview of how corporate structures can be implemented to facilitate minimized taxation, deferral of tax, continued access to the income splitting and Lifetime Capital Gains exemption and ease of debt repayment burden, all while maintaining 100 percent compliance with regulatory bodies.
Wrapping up the seminars will be the Fine Art of Longlining at 1:30 p.m., which will explain briefly how the fishery is conducted and how to reach the premium market price.
Billed as Canada’s longest-running, most successful commercial fishing show, the Eastern Canadian Fisheries Exposition is held every two years in southwestern Nova Scotia and offers visitors a comprehensive showcase of products and services for the commercial fisheries industry. The show is presented in partnership with the Navigator Magazine, the Voice of Atlantic Canada’s Fishing Industry.
The event attracts visitors from throughout the Maritimes, across the country, and the eastern United States. At its last edition in 2017, attendance numbers soared to 4,726 – the highest in more than a decade. Visitors to this key biennial event include fish harvesters, fish processors, those involved in the workboat industry, search and rescue organizations, and other professions relating to the marine industries.
