AUBURN - Genevieve Beique can transform a blank sheet of paper into a remarkable work of art with just a few good pencils.

The self-taught artist hailing from Quebec City started drawing with her mother as soon as she was able to put pen to paper.

“Every day that it was rainy and we didn’t have anything to do, we would draw,” said Beique.

“I’ve always drawn and I always needed to draw.”

Her love of the craft only flourished with time. She still yearns to capture even the most minute details in her subjects, and finds solace in the hours spent with colour pencils in hand.

“It still surprises me to this day that it’s the one thing I don’t get tired of,” she said, noting that she even feels the urge to draw after completing a 12-hour shift for her full-time job at the Michelin tire plant in Waterville.

“With anything else I’d fall asleep; if I start drawing I’ll wake up.”

Beique has earned high praise for numerous pet portraits and wildlife drawings completed for custom orders placed through a business venture she started four years ago, Simply Art by Genevieve. Among the numerous glowing reviews posted to the online Etsy shop page for her business, one describes Beique’s work as “so extraordinary that it is indescribable.”

“It’s incredible,” said Beique, referring to the sense of fulfillment she gains from drawing.

“I love it. I can do that all day.”

Beique sees arts, books and music as integral aspects of her art-oriented existence. She started learning violin at the age of 10, and faithfully honed her skills to the point that she was able to play in orchestras.

“I have to be doing something with my hands,” she said.

“I have to be creating something.”
