The Yarmouth Mariners maintained a perfect record of home wins in a game against the Amherst Ramblers that had both an exciting and an odd ending on Oct. 20.
The Mariners captured their 10th home win in a shootout after a shot by Andrew Martell – which Rambler goalie Joel Goguen thought he had successfully blocked – flew into the air and landed in the net behind the Ramblers goalie.
The Mariners had trailed for most of the game. Amherst had a 1-0 lead after the first period on a goal by Dawson Grenier (Brady Griffen-Hefford, Jordan King). A Mariners goal in the first frame was called off because the net was off.
Amherst scored again in the second period with a power play goal by Caleb Rich (Tayden Woods, Cole Waugh).
Still down two goals nearly midway in the third, the Mariners scored three goals in a four-minute span to take a 3-2 lead. Scoring were Chris Goreham unassisted, Kyle Bergh (Goreham, Luc Poirier) on the power play and Logan Timmons (Campbell Balk, Brendan Young.)
A Yarmouth shot on Amherst’s empty net in the final minute just missed its mark, keeping the game within reach for the Ramblers. The Ramblers’ Jordan King (Liam Conrad) scored with 13 seconds left, tying the game and sending it into OT.
After a scoreless overtime the game was sent into a shootout, with Martell being the sixth shooter between the two teams.
Leif Hertz had the win in nets for the Mariners. Yarmouth had 33 shot on net during the game. Amherst had 29.
The game was the final Pink in the Rink home game for the Mariners, who don't play at home again until Nov. 10 when they host South Shore.
However bids on the custom pink jerseys the Mariners have been wearing are being accepted until the end of the month. The money raised will be donated to the Dr. Edwin Janke Cancer Care Centre at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital.
