UNB wins third straight AUS men's soccer championship on Acadia turf


WOLFVILLE - The UNB Varsity Reds are the Atlantic Universisty Sport men's soccer champions for a third straight year following a 2-1 win over the top-ranked Cape Breton Capers Nov. 8 in Wolfville.

The Varsity Reds, who entered the championship tournament seeded second, were the only team to go through the weekend undefeated.

Oliver Jones and Kalen Park had the goals for UNB in the final; conference MVP Justin Maheu replied for the Capers.

UNB advanced to the final with a 1-0 semifinal win over the host Acadia Axemen Nov. 6. Jones got credit for the game's only goal, scored late in the first half.

Brandon Eagle recorded the shutout and Nigel Goodwin played well in goal for Acadia.

In the other semifinal, Cape Breton blanked UPEI 4-0. Stuart Heath had two goals for the Capers, and Sandro Rajkovic and Nico Gibbons one goal each. Scott Shewfelt earned the shutout.

In quarter-final action Nov. 5, Acadia shut out Dalhousie 2-0, with Matthew Berrigan getting credit for both goals and Goodwin recording the shutout.

In the first quarter-final, UPEI blanked Memorial 2-0, with Kyle Dutton and Jeff Moore scoring the goals and Brett Strba earning the shutout.
