Digby U18 boys headed to soccer provincials

DIGBY – Digby Tigers U18 boys are going to soccer provincials.

The Tigers capped off an undefeated regular season with a 3-0 win over Kings West in the regional playoffs Aug. 15 in Digby.

Nathan Janson scored twice for Digby in the first half and Anthony Jacques added a third late in the second half.

Ryan Doucette recorded the shut out.

This was the fifth time Digby had played and beat Kings West this year.

Digby coach Oliver Janson says his team had about 65 per cent of the possession this game.

“Our guys are playing smart possession football rather than dump and chase,” he said. “They’re making short passes, moving the ball around, switching sides of the field and holding onto possession.”

The Tigers will represent the Western Valley Region at U18 soccer provincials next weekend, Aug. 22 and 23 in Halifax.

Digby will have two round robin games to start the six-team tournament Saturday and then hopefully a semi Sunday morning and a final Sunday afternoon.

“I think we’ll be competitive,” says Janson. “It will be tough and we’ll have to play really well.”

Because Bridgetown and Clare did not have U18 boys teams this year, Digby picked up a couple players from each of those clubs.

“We’re pretty deep,” said Janson. “We played some games with no subs and still won because everyone is good.”

Digby’s only loss this season was a round robin game against Yarmouth, but then Digby went on to beat Yarmouth in the final of that tournament.
