Acadia University’s 29th annual Gunn Baldursson Memorial Tournament will soon be underway in Kings County.

WOLFVILLE - Kings County will soon see an influx of soccer players in pursuit of “I won the Gunn” tees.

Acadia University’s 29th annual Gunn Baldursson Memorial Tournament is slated to take place from July 15-17.

The all-female tournament includes divisions for athletes on U10 to ladies 7-aside teams.

The Gunn Baldursson Memorial Tournament website speaks to the inspiration behind the tournament.

“Gunn Baldursson was a young woman who showed the best of everything. She was an exceptional athlete, a leader, an individual, an outstanding scholar and a musician who soared,” the website reads.

Baldursson, a native of Iceland, was in her third year of pre-med studies at Acadia University when she was killed in a motor vehicle accident on November 26, 1987.

“As a university soccer player, Baldursson was the leading scorer in Canada and an Atlantic Conference All-Star in each of the three years she played. In 1987 she led the Acadia Women's Soccer Team to victory in the AUAA soccer championship and to a berth in the Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union championship. Her natural abilities earned her status as a first-team All-Canadian that year.”

The tournament launched in Baldursson’s honour has attracted teams from as far off as Iceland. It is played on fields in Wolfville, New Minas, Kentville and Port Williams.
