There was no place like home – well, sort of – for the Wolfville boys’ volleyball team as they captured the Western Region junior high boys’ championship Nov. 30 in Wolfville.

Seven other schools from throughout region – Evangeline Middle School, St. Mary’s Bay Academy, Clare, Ecole Par en Bas, Maple Grove, Bayview and Centre – joined host Wolfville in the tournament, played in its entirety at Acadia’s War Memorial Gymnasium.

Wolfville won the regional banner with a 25-16, 27-25 victory over Centre from Lunenburg County. Bayview from Mahone Bay topped EMS in the consolation final.

Wolfville advanced to the final with a three-set victory over Valley rival EMS. Wolfville won the opening set 25-15 and EMS took the second 25-10.

The third and deciding set was to be the first team to 15, but the win had to be by two points. The two evenly matched teams went back-and-forth until Wolfville finally prevailed by a 26-24 score.

Wolfville phys ed teacher and tournament organizer Jeff Moore described the semifinal win as “an awesome match, with both teams playing incredible volleyball.”

In fact, the competition was good throughout the tournament which, according to Moore, benefitted greatly from being able to be played at Acadia thanks to the generosity and cooperation of the university. “It was a great day,” he said, “and, at the end, everybody went away feeling good about the day and about the tournament.”

The regional banner is the most Wolfville can attain this season, as there is no provincial competition at the junior high level.
