ANNAPOLIS VALLEY - Four Valley Cheer Athletics All-star teams were on the road, heading to the Halifax Cheer Elite-hosted Maritime Meltdown competition in Truro, held at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre.
Three teams finished with top-three performances, including some zero-deductions routines.
The Mini Braves reworked their routine in a week, following their last competition, and took as much confidence as they could into two days of competition – even scoring zero deductions on day two to finish in third place in their division.
Youth Titanium had a challenging day one routine, starting off strong but with a fall in their pyramid mid-routine.
“What you did out there on that floor was incredible,” VCA coach Megan Shepherd told athletes on the team. “Falls happen, mistakes are made - it’s what you do afterwards that counts. You got up and finished what you had to do, and you finished stronger than I have ever seen you finish that routine. In that moment, you learned the power of working together. You’re becoming not only skilled athletes, but smart athletes.”
Titanium finished day two with a more solid routine, coming out of the competition in second place.
Junior Steel hit zero with its day one performance, flawless and sitting in second place going into day two – to score a second zero deductions performance! Steel finished second overall in their division.
Senior Bulletproof put in two good performances, with strong stunting scores pulling their overall marks up and a zero deductions second day. The five teams that regularly fill out this division have been finishing within a point or two spread so far this season. Bulletproof finished fourth overall.
“This is an incredibly tough division, and your hold your own against these teams,” Shepherd said. “You left your hearts on the mats this weekend.”
