PORT WILLIAMS – It’s a win that won’t be forgotten any time soon.
Team Nova Scotia topped Alberta 65-62 to earn bronze at the Canadian U-15 boys’ basketball championships in Kamploops, B.C. Aug. 11.
Port Williams native Kaj McVicar, who played centre on the team, says it was an exciting game from the first jump to the final buzzer.
“We were up for most of the game, but it was close,” he said. “They’d keep coming back and getting up, and at one point they took a four-point lead, but then we took it back. Then closer to the end of the game we just took a larger lead that they couldn’t get back.”
MacVicar added that the tournament, while very competitive, was a very fun and valuable experience that will improve his game moving forward.
“It was very intense, lots of competition in that game,” said MacVicar. “But it was a really good experience, it was super fun, and getting to meet new athletes and really getting to spend time with my teammates and coaches was great.”
The biggest thing MacVicar took from the tournament was the realization that success in the sport of basketball comes from working as a team.
“Just stay as a team,” said MacVicar. “You’ll succeed if you stay as a team.”
The U-17 Nova Scotia team took home gold after beating Team Quebec with a score of 98-90.
MacVicar says he’s contemplating trying out for the U-17 team this coming summer, but he’ll have to wait and see what the year has in store for him.
