The NKEC Titans senior boys’ and girls’ basketball teams are both headed for this weekend’s regional championships after wins in regional challenge games this week.
The NKEC boys, third in the Valley league after losing their final league game 86-58 to Central Kings on Monday, were challenged by Liverpool, the fourth-place team in the South Shore league, to a one-game, winner-take-all challenge.
That game took place Tuesday evening in Canning, and the Titans opened a 24-12 lead halfway through the first half en route to an 84-57 win.
Shane Fletcher with 18 points, Nick Brown with 17, Matt Chase with 13 and Aaron Fisher with 12 all managed double figures for NKEC. Justin Doucette led all scorers with 22 points for Liverpool, and Tristan Fancy added 16.
The win advanced the Titans to regionals this weekend in Bridgewater, where they are scheduled to open Friday against Kings-Edgehill in what could be a tough matchup.
The NKEC girls were also involved in a regional challenge Monday at Forest Heights in Chester Basin, and came home with a 63-34 win.
Senior Jolene MacIntyre led the Titans with 22 points and 11 steals, and Emma Young had 13 points and eight steals. With the win, the NKEC girls also advanced to regionals.
