Middleton Regional High School girls' hoops team hosts Heart of the Valley tourney

MIDDLETON - On Friday and Saturday, Jan. 9 and 10, the MRHS Senior High Girls Basketball Team will host their annual Heart of the Valley Tournament.

MRHS Monarchs’ team captains Kyra Britney, Eden Burke, Lauren Wentzell, and Erica Theisen accept the Steve Brewer Memorial plaque recently.  The team defeated Park View 59-55 in the championship game.

This year’s teams include Central Kings, King’s-Edgehill, Yarmouth, and the host Monarchs. 

With nine players returning from last year’s provincial championship team, the Monarchs boast experience along with some exciting rookies.  The team is led by four seniors – guards Kyra Britney and Eden Burke, and posts Erica Theisen and Lauren Wentzell.  The Monarchs have been dominant in the post so far this season with strong play from Wentzell, Theisen, Sydney Smith, Martina MacKinnon, and rookies Erin Burke and Kate Wentzell.   

The returning seniors along with Alaina Britney, Courtney Garand, Ally Garand and rookies Alma Frias Cruz, Rachel Holland, and Melissa Burbidge give the squad solid scoring from the wing and tenacious defense. 

The team is currently 9-0 including 5-0 in league games.  Just before the Christmas break, the squad won the Steve Brewer Memorial Tournament in Yarmouth.
