By Bob SanfordThe Middleton Regional High School Girls really like playing basketball in late February and early March. In 2013 in Springhill, in 2014 at home and now, in 2015 at Dalbrae Academy in Mabou they have captured the gold medals and the championship banner for NSSAF Division 3 Girls Basketball three straight years.

Under head coach Greg Bower and assisted by Nick Baskwill, the team loses valuable seniors every year, as most teams do, but they come tearing back each November ready to take on all comers. Undefeated in Valley League play at 8-0, they outscored their opponents by an average of almost 27 points. Their overall season record was 24-2.

Middleton 52 - SAEC 35

In the quarter finals on Thursday, the Monarchs started out with a relatively easy game. The regular starters played very little and the bench squad took over and played extremely well with Eden Burke leading the way with 11 points and Kate Wentzell adding 10. The defence had 13 steals and grabbed 26 total rebounds.

Middleton 64 - Kings-Edgehill 52

Friday’s semi- final game against KES was much tougher. The Monarch’s record for the season versus KES was 4-0 (but three of those were single digit wins) and KES played very well but Middleton held a 32-22 half-time lead. In the second half, that lead was to dwindle to only 3 points but the Monarchs rallied with scoring from Sydney Smith 19, Lauren Wentzell 17, Erica Theisen 15 and Rachel Holland 11.

Middleton 57 - Dalbrae Academy 41

The championship game on Saturday was against the home team and the gym was standing room only with the Middleton fans and supporters banging on any noisemaker they could lay their hands on. Dalbrae had the attitude “not in our house, you don’t” and the first half was a hard fought one with Middleton leading by only one point, 17-16. Dalbrae grabbed the lead again by 3 points in the third quarter but the Monarchs prevailed and they led 39-30 at the end of the third quarter. That lead would not diminish by more than 6 and with great defence from the team and some successful free throws at the end, the final score was 57-41. Leading the team’s scoring was Lauren Wentzell with 20 (along with 14 blocked shots) while Erica Theisen and Sydney Smith added 13 each. Coach Bower: “In this game, the team played as good defence as any team I have ever coached.”

Over the last four years: Seniors Eden Burke, Kyra Britney and Erica Theisen each have three gold medals as does Sydney Smith (grade 11).  Senior Lauren Wentzell has been in four consecutive Provincial Championship games so she has three gold medals and one silver. Not bad.
