Local boxers stood up and were counted during an amateur boxing card sponsored by the Evangeline Trail Amateur Boxing Club Nov. 18 in Kentville.

The 12-bout card featured boxers from the Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador Canada Winter Games teams and a pair of provincial championship box-offs as well as up-and-coming boxers from Valley clubs from Windsor to Middleton.

In the final bout of the evening, Joey Best of the ETABC won the provincial title in the 160-pound (75kg) weight division, outpointing Craig Hillier of the Citadel Boxing Club 25-21 in an entertaining contest.

Needless to say, it was a decision that sat well with the majority of the hometown crowd at the Kentville Fire Hall.

Best and Hiller were two of five boxers involved in a box-off for the provincial title in their weight division. With Saturday’s win, Best has now defeated all four of his fellow finalists, with Hillier representing his final hurdle.

In the other provincial championship bout on the card, Castillo Clayton of the City of Lakes Boxing Club in Dartmouth outpointed Dior Arif of the East Coast club 27-23 to win the provincial title in the 150-pound weight division.

Rachel Aalders of the ETABC, the provincial champion in the 119-pound (54kg) female division, boxed a three-round exhibition against Norma Marshall of the Albion club from Pictou County,

Both Best and Aalders will be competing at nationals in the New Year, Best at senior nationals in St. Hyacinthe, Quebec, and Aalders at junior nationals in St. Catharine’s, Ontario.

In the opening bout of the evening, Daniel White of the ETABC lost on points to Christian MacDonald of the Albion Boxing Club in the first-ever competitive bout for both boxers.

The second bout featured Cyrus Taylor of the Pegasus Boxing Club in Middleton against Cody Greene of the Albion club, with Taylor the winner on points.

In the third bout, Tyler Benjamin of the Valley Boxing Academy in Windsor lost a close decision 23-22 on points to Dave Arthur of the Twin City club.

The fourth bout saw Steven Hill, another of the younger ETABC boxers, edge Brett Fraser of the South Shore club 13-12 in an entertaining bout. The two are scheduled to face each other again on a card next month in Bridgewater.

In the first of four bouts between Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador boxers, Sonny McClelland of the Berwick Boxing Club was declared the winner over David Barlette when the referee stopped the fight in the second round of their 169-pound bout.

In the next bout, Shawn Alfonzo, like Barlette a member of the Newfoundland and Labrador Canada Games team, won on points over Lee Coldwell of the Albion club and the Nova Scotia Canada Games team.

After a short intermission and the Aalders-Marshall exhibition bout, there was more interprovincial action, with Jeremy Powers from Newfoundland outpointing Cameron Howatt of the Valley Boxing Academy by a 17-15 score.

In the tenth bout of the evening and final interprovincial matchup between Canada Games boxers, Brody Blair of the Albion club edged Ginguis Kalonga from Newfoundland 14-12 in a four-round bout.
